Australian shoppers are taking advantage of the strong dollar and purchasing items from online overseas retailers that offer the same items as Australian retailers at lower prices. To compete with international retailers and attract local consumers, Australian retailers are investing in technology and ecommerce solutions.

Computerworld reported retailers are leveraging social media to improve customer service online and build a trusting relationship with consumers. Advanced check-out options and mobile solutions are allowing retailers to engage consumers and encourage repeat purchases.

Mark Doro, IT operations general manager for Myer, told the news source that technology is allowing the retailer to improve point of sale options and customer loyalty.

"This has enabled the company to reduce transaction times at POS, improve target marketing to consumers, provide more immediate and accurate information regarding stock on hand in any of its stores, as well as increase security in store for staff and customers," said Doro.

Apparel retailer ModCloth is another company that has found success and growth through digital marketing, merchandising and social commerce efforts. The retailer focuses all its business operations on keeping the customer satisfied, which has helped the company build a very loyal consumer base, Power Retail reported.
