Online auction website eBay is the most popular ecommerce site in Australia, Singapore and the United Kingdom, reports the Independent.
According to data from Experian Hitwise, the online retailer came in tops in the week ending July 10, receiving 21 percent of visits in the UK, and 26.5 percent of visits in Australia. The shopping site was also the most popular website in Singapore that week, with 5 percent of visits.
The company's regional subsidiaries and specific retailers - such as eBay Motors - are also quite popular with online shoppers. In Australia, eBay Motors, which was ranked as a separate site, came in sixth overall with 0.78 percent of the visits. EBay.com.au beat out its American mother site eBay.com to take the top spot in the country, but the two sites were ranked first and second, respectively.
In Australia, Amazon.com came in as the third most popular website with 2 percent of visits. It was also popular in the UK, ranking second with 6 percent. However, the online bookseller and mega retailer topped the list in the United States - Amazon.com beat out eBay in America with 15.5 percent of the visits. Ebay.com didn't make the top five in the U.S.; those spots were taken by the online shopping platforms of Walmart, Target, Best Buy and JC Penny, respectively.
Ebay, which boasts 90 million active users worldwide, is the world's largest online marketplace. In 2009, the total worth of goods sold on eBay was US$60 billion, or US$2,000 every second.
